In February 2019, verifications.io, an email address validation service, suffered a data breach when security researchers Bob Diachenko and Vinny Troia discovered that the data was publicly accessible in a MongoDB instance without password protection. The breach exposed 763 million unique email addresses, and many records included additional personal information like names, phone numbers, IP addresses, dates of birth, and genders. Notably, no passwords were included in the exposed data. As a result of the disclosure, the Verifications.io website went offline, although an archived version is still accessible. The compromised data encompassed dates of birth, email addresses, employers, genders, geographic locations, IP addresses, job titles, names, phone numbers, and physical addresses.
