In May 2020, ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen over 500 GB of Microsoft source code from the company's private GitHub account. The group published approximately 1 GB of data from the hacked GitHub account on a hacking forum. Initially, some cybersecurity experts questioned the legitimacy of the claims, but doubts were dispelled upon analysis of the code. Microsoft acknowledged the breach in a statement to Wired, confirming their awareness of the situation. Subsequently, Microsoft took measures to secure their GitHub account, as reported by ShinyHunters, who stated they could no longer access any repositories.

Update 5/8/20: Added information that a Microsoft employee has verified the authenticity of the incident, along with a comment from the company.
